Understanding the Estate and Gift Tax Audit Process
Presenters Anna Soliman and Nicholas Hulwi started their legal careers as Estate and Gift Tax Attorneys for the Internal Revenue Service SB/SE Division. With their experience, they will provide insight on estate and gift tax audits and will walk you through the different phases of the audit process. Their presentation will focus on:
- Understanding how estate and gift tax returns are processed and classified;
- What to expect from an estate and gift tax audit;
- Tips on what the IRS looks for regarding specific audit issues; and
- Post-audit next steps.
Anna Soliman, Managing Director, Trust Counsel at Fiduciary Trust International, is a senior trusts and estates advisor with broad experience in the area of estate planning and trust and estate administration, including preparing and reviewing estate tax returns and gift tax returns, and leading audits against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Anna was most recently an attorney in private practice in Los Angeles, where her responsibilities included crafting and preparing complex estate plans and business succession plans for high-net-worth individuals. She also assisted clients in matters ranging from trust administration and probate to IRS audits. Earlier in her career, she worked for the IRS as an estate tax attorney and served as deputy district attorney in the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. Anna earned her Master of Laws (LLM) from Chapman University School of Law, her Juris Doctor degree from the University of California Davis School of Law, and her Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy, cum laude, from the University of California at Irvine. She is admitted to the California State Bar. Anna serves on the Executive Committee of the Trust and Estates Section of the California Lawyers Association. She is also the Vice-Chair of the Fiduciary Income Tax Section of the American Bar Association.
Nicholas D. Hulwi is Of Counsel with Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek. Mr. Hulwi understands the importance of his client’s objectives, and provides customized services to ensure they are accomplished effectively and efficiently. Mr. Hulwi is licensed to practice law in the states of California, Nevada, Minnesota, and North Dakota. Upon completion of law school, Mr. Hulwi spent nearly six years as an attorney with the United States Department of the Treasury – Internal Revenue Service, as part of the Service’s Estate and Gift Tax Program. While with the Service, Mr. Hulwi examined countless estate and gift tax returns, analyzed intricate testamentary documents, and scrutinized business valuations. Mr. Hulwi also assisted with the classification of estate and gift tax returns, and he served as a lead attorney (acting) with the Estate and Gift Tax program. Most recently, Mr. Hulwi was a partner with a mid-size law firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he focused on preparing wills and trusts, complex tax planning, estate and gift tax return preparation, probate, trust administration, coordination and response to state and federal tax audits, entity formation and business valuation. Mr. Hulwi is certified to perform business valuations by the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts® (NACVA) as a Certified Valuation Analyst® (CVA®). NACVA’s CVA® designation is the world’s premiere valuation credential and is the only valuation credential accredited by both the National Commission for Certifying Agencies® (NCCA®), the accreditation body of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence™ (ICE™), and the ANSI National Accreditation Board® (ANAB®).
